Solar Panels Required for CA Homes?
California passed a law in May, 2018 requiring newly built homes in California to have Solar Panel on roofs. Within 2 years time, the law will take effect, making that cost to build a home here about $8,000-$12,000 more. Affordable housing is a serious issue in CA – the Land expenses are too high to begin with.
This law was passed in a unanimous vote by the 5 Members in the California Energy Commission which did not seem to mind the additional costs that adding a solar panel entailed. State-Officials say that the cost added to each home will be made up by having lower energy bills. Some California cities are requiring that buildings have solar panels and use solar power, or agreed to commitments of clean energy. Other states are following along, New Jersey, Massachusetts, & Washington D.C are examples of places where apparent legislation are looking to be passed that require building to use solar energy. Hawaii is a recent state that just mandated energy-efficiency measures like Solar Water Heaters.
California is planning to have %50 of all energy to be solar by 2030, according to California Law. Solar Energy is California’s main source for growing the states energy production. A new rate structure will be coming to California tomorrow that will charge based on the time of day. Homeowners with energy efficient features such as a battery can will be able to reduce energy costs this but using it at a more optimal time. Things like energy meters are being made that keep track of all consumption. With Batteries and Solar power, minimizing power use will be even more common than expected.
It’s been clear for awhile that California was going to make a drastic change like this. Research shows these Solar Panels, on a 30 Year Mortgage, will add about $40 to monthly payment while reducing energy costs ( Cooling, Heating, Lights, etc) by $80. This makes it a worthwhile investment for any new homeowners. Alternate alternatives are available to purchasing these Solar Panels. For example, Instead of spending the roughly $14,000 to buy Solar Panels, Leases are available for about $76 a month. These requirements show a strong future for Californians clean energy. Along with this involves the large expansion to the Solar market, owned by private companies. This new legislation requires the homes to produce about 2-3 Kilowatts depending on the overall size of the home.
