What do They Affect?

Roofing shingles can affect your home in many ways.  They are a very crucial & important part of any residential or commercial construction project. Here are some ways shingles affects different aspects of a Los Angeles Construction project.

Appearance

Roofing shingles will greatly decide on your style of home. Depending on the materials & colors used – they can give a very difference feel of appearance. Since they cover the entire top of a residential household – it’s easy to see why they play such a factor in how a home looks overall.

Utilities

Roofing Shingles will effect how many utilities in the house will function. Some types of materials & colors are better are trapping, or releasing heat. Depending on your geographical location it can determine if things like your aircondition or heater have to work twice as hard as other to trap cool/or hot air in.

Longevity

Often overlooked, the longevity of your roof will greatly be determined by the type of shingle used for a certain roof. Some shingles will not be able to last as long in certain weather. It’s important to do research for deciding on a viable shingle.

3-Tab Roof Shingles

3-Tab Roof Shingles are the most common type of Roofing Shingle used in North America. Also known as asphalt shingles – these are rectangular shingles that come in many shades of colors.  These types of shingles are some of the lowest costing. They are great for low budget construction projects.

3-Tab Roof Shingles are popular because they come in hundreds of colors, are very available, and are easier to install than other traditional shingles.

Architectural Shingles

These Architectural Shingles are known as a sort of premium asphalt shingle. Although a little bit more pricey, these are similar to 3-Tab Roof Shingles except are known to be “dimensional” or “laminated”.

They were created in the 1970’s and are a very common use for replacement roof projects. Architectural shingles, like 3-tab shingles come in a huge variety of colors. They are often used of 3-tab roof shingles because they last longer, are more stylish, and can be more wind resistant.

Architectural Shingles also have a relative called “Designer Shingles” these are uniquely designed roof shingles that come in different shapes and creative colors.

Tile Roof Shingles

Terracotta Clay roofing are used in historical properties that have a old world, southwest, or California mission look.  These clay roofs are very common in Los Angeles County. Clay shingles are widely recognized for having a Spanish style “Wave-shape” however clay shingles are available in a huge variety of colors and shapes.

Roofing Tile Shingles can last a very long time, the top & oldest tile roofing company has a 75 year warranty.

Wood Roof Shingles

Wood Roof Shingles are another very popular roofing material that has been used for centuries. Although it’s becoming increasingly less popular (because of house fires & safety concerns) it has proven to be a very good roofing & even sometimes a better alternative to things like asphalt roofing.

Asphalt roofing has less insulation than traditional wood roofing. These means they are less wind resistant, and also cant have a completely different feel than any other roofing material. However, there are more than one type of Roofing that occasionally gets confused.

Shake Roof Shingles

Shake Roof Shingles are different from wood shingles only because of how they are made. Wood Roof Shingles are distinct pieces of wood that are sawn on either side to show a structured shape.

Shake Shingles are made by splitting the log at the grain – creating a original texture every time – along with a more “Wood Feeling” to the home.

Shake Roof Singles can also be sawn on once side and split on the other. There are new recent composite roofing shingles that mimic Shake roof Shingles and can hold color better & are more wind resistant.

Slate Roof Shingles

Slate Roofs started to become popular in the 1800’s and it began replacing wooden shingles.

Slate Roofing is durable, eco friendly, and ofcourse fireproof. Some roofs originally made of slate still stand today using the same material.

They are very popular because they are a natural stone roof that has a well shaded appearance. These roofs began to first show up in northeast states Like Vermont, Pennsylvania, & New York.

Metal Roofing

The most common type of metal roofing is known as a standing seam roof, which is designed flat or corrugated metal panels. They are straight ribs that run up and down the roofing slope. The most common material used in metal roofing is coated steel or aluminum.

There are also metal roofs that copy the style of shingles. There are also metal roofing with the same designs as wood, clay, slate, etc.

Solar Roof Shingles

Solar Roofing Shingles are a becoming more popular everyday. As Solar roofs are not new, Solar Shingles are a fairly new invention. Only being developed my several companies – it is projected to be a top roofing material.

These types of shingles are Photovoltaic Cells (PV) designed to look like traditional roof shingles. They contract energy from the sun.
